Biography

Jean-Sébastien Roy is a researcher at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Rehabilitation and Social Integration (Cirris) and a Professor in the School of Rehabilitation Sciences at Université Laval (Quebec City, Canada). The objective of his research program is to advance our understanding of the development and chronicity of musculoskeletal disorders, thereby enabling the design of more effective interventions that leverage modern technologies and most current evidence, while also improving access to healthcare services. He has published over 240 articles in peer-reviewed journals (https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2853-9940) and 9 book chapters, and has given over 60 presentations at national and international conferences. Before being involved full time in research, he has worked for 10 years as a physical therapist at the Laval University Hospital, specializing in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.

How does your current work contribute to improve treatment or understanding of pain?
My research contributes to a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying the chronicity of musculoskeletal pain. More specifically, it aims to identify the biological, psychological, and social factors that influence the transition from acute to persistent pain. By improving our understanding of these risk factors and their interactions, it becomes possible to develop more targeted and personalized rehabilitation interventions tailored to each patient’s specific needs. Ultimately, this knowledge can help prevent the chronicity of pain, improve treatment effectiveness, and promote better functional recovery for people living with musculoskeletal disorders.
