Biography

Caroline Arbor completed a doctorate in nursing at McGill University (2013) and a post-doctorate at the Center for Advanced Studies in Sleep Medicine (CÉAMS) at HSCM (2015). As part of her postdoctoral training, she completed an advanced training course at the prestigious COMA Group (Liège, Belgium).

Her research interests focus on:
• Components of pain after craniocerebral trauma
• Assessment of residual perceptual activity of patients with impaired consciousness in intensive care
• The development of non-pharmacological methods for pain management with complex clienteles

How does your current work contribute to improve treatment or understanding of pain?
My research program investigates how sleep influences pain perception in adults receiving specialized care, particularly after trauma or cancer treatment. Disrupted sleep can amplify pain, fatigue, and stress, slowing recovery and reducing quality of life. Using innovative tools such as wearable technologies, clinical assessments, and pupillometry, my team identifies the most vulnerable patients and the factors that intensify pain. This knowledge enables us to develop personalized interventions that are integrated into care to relieve pain and improve treatment tolerance. In this way, our research contributes to a better understanding of pain and transforms its management in hospitals and at home.
