Anais Lacasse

A Canada-wide project to better understand chronic pain among veterans

Associate members:

Professor Anaïs Lacasse is tackling a major health issue: chronic pain among veterans. Her innovative study explores their care trajectories across Canada, shedding light on the challenges of transitioning between military and civilian healthcare systems.

In this episode, Anaïs Lacasse—full professor and holder of the Institutional Research Chair in Chronic Pain Epidemiology at the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT), as well as co-director of the Quebec Pain Research Network (QPRN)—discusses the challenges related to chronic pain. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing high-risk populations, particularly veterans, who are twice as likely to suffer from chronic pain.

She presents a research project specifically dedicated to Canadian veterans, focusing on their care trajectories, including the use of both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments. The project places particular emphasis on the transition from military to civilian life, which involves navigating two different healthcare systems.

The study aims to recruit participants from across all Canadian provinces in order to identify differences in access to care and to better understand veterans’ lived experiences. The project is conducted in partnership with several universities, the Chronic Pain Centre of Excellence for Canadian Veterans (CPCOE), and the QPRN.
