Virtual reality against pain and anxiety

Poor pain management in children during painful medical procedures has deleterious consequences on their future lives. Virtual reality represents an avenue of choice to improve this management.

Research by Sylvie Le May, a professor in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Montreal and a member of the QPRN, has shown that virtual reality is an effective distraction during painful procedures with children. The use of this technology, developed by an emergency physician, is now common practice at the Shriners Hospital in Montreal, as illustrated by this Radio Canada video.
