Dr Michael Verret is an assistant professor in the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care at Université Laval and a researcher at the Centre de recherche du CHU de Québec-Université Laval in the Population Health and Optimal Health Practices research group. He practises anaesthesiology at the CHU de Québec-Université Laval. In 2024, he completed post-doctoral training in epidemiology at the University of Ottawa's Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. Dr Verret directs the research programme Optimizing Patient-centred outcomes Using opioid minimization Strategies (OPUS). The main objective of his programme is to describe, evaluate and guide perioperative clinical practices in the use of pharmacological and non-pharmacological co-analgesic strategies. The programme focuses on patient-oriented clinical outcomes such as quality of recovery and pain and its functional impact, with the aim of identifying effective alternatives to opioids that have a significant and lasting impact on surgical patients.

How does your current work contribute to improve treatment or understanding of pain?
As part of my research program Optimizing Patient-centred outcomes Using opioid minimization Strategies (OPUS), my main objective is to better guide perioperative clinical practices in using co-analgesic strategies. To do so, I focus on the evaluation of patient-centered clinical outcomes such as quality of recovery, pain and functional impact. It generates results with a significant and lasting impact on surgical patients.
