Biography

Maude Desjardins is an assistant professor of speech-language pathology at Université Laval's École des sciences de la réadaptation and a researcher at the Centre de recherche interdisciplinaire en réadaptation et intégration sociale (Cirris). She received her PhD in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2019, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Voice and Motor Learning Lab at the University of Delaware in 2021. Her research focuses on the physiology of voice production and rehabilitation of voice disorders. She is particularly interested in the biomechanical and sensorimotor interactions between voice and breathing, and how they are affected by states such as fear, anxiety, fatigue and pain. The long-term aim of her research programme is to better understand how these interactions shape healthy and pathological voice production, and how they need to be addressed to improve voice therapy outcomes. Her translational research programme combines methods from the fields of voice, breathing and psychology.

Why did you choose this career?
I chose this career because of my passion for the human voice. Musculoskeletal disorders affecting the voice remain poorly understood, despite their significant functional impact on voice professionals such as singers and teachers, whose vocal use is essential to the performance of their daily tasks. I want to contribute to advancing knowledge about the factors that influence these disorders in order to better prevent them and intervene more effectively.
