Biography
Dr. Ji Zhang is a Professor in the Department of Neurology & Neurosurgery at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, and at the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences, McGill University. She has dedicated her career to advancing the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of neuropathic pain, with the ultimate goal of informing the development of new and effective treatment strategies.
Her research program focuses on investigating the role of the immune system in nerve degeneration and regeneration, as well as in the development and persistence of chronic pain. Specifically, she examines the complex interactions between injured neurons and surrounding glial cells, immune cells, and endothelial cells.
Dr. Zhang has developed and routinely employs a variety of animal models of peripheral neuropathy, including models induced by injury or trauma, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders. With over twenty years of experience in this field, she has been a recognized expert in neuroimmunology in chronic pain.
She has published more than 60 research papers in leading journals across the fields of neuroscience and immunology. Her research is consistently supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
