Adapting an online chronic pain self-management program to military culture: insights from a scoping review and ongoing participatory work with Pascale Marier-Deschênes

Canadian veterans experience chronic pain at significantly higher rates than civilians, yet most online self-management programs are designed for the general population. To better understand how such programs can be adapted to align with veterans’ needs, we conducted a scoping review exploring the presence and nature of military cultural adaptations in app- and web-based interventions used with veterans through research projects. The review revealed that cultural adaptation components are often mentioned only superficially. Still, some strategies emerged, such as integrating veterans’ stories and narrative, emphasizing action-oriented and goal-driven content, and shortening materials to align with preferences for clarity and efficiency.

These insights provided a foundation for critically examining how existing content could be reshaped to better align with veterans’ mindset and lived experiences. Agir pour moi, an online chronic pain self-management program originally developed for civilians, is currently being tailored for Canadian veterans through an ongoing participatory process involving veterans and health professionals. Key changes include visual redesign, new modules (including one on decision-making around cannabis use), integration of testimonials, and refinement of content to ensure relevance, brevity, and cultural resonance. This work aims to enhance the cultural relevance and accessibility of digital pain self-management tools for veteran populations.
