Gabriella Gobbi has discovered a compound that improves deep sleep and reduces neuropathic pain.
Discoveries of therapeutic options are sometimes made by chance. Gabriella Gobi, a physician and professor at the McGill University Health Centre, experienced this in her search for a compound that could reduce anxiety and depression. In testing a candidate compound, it not only showed positive effects on deep, restorative sleep, but also, after development, showed positive effects on neuropathic pain. This new compound appears to be an extremely interesting discovery in the search for an alternative to the use of opioids for pain management and to limit the deleterious effects of insomnia in a number of conditions. Although hopes are high, this compound still needs to pass several costly development and validation stages before one day, perhaps, it will become an additional tool for doctors and patients.
