Female sexual pain: progress to come

Vestibulodynia results in severe pain around the vaginal entrance. In the course of their lives, one in five women aged between 18 and 35 will experience it.

Mélanie Morin is a physiotherapist, professor at the Université de Sherbrooke and member of the QPRN. Her research interests focus on provoked vestibulodynia, which is severe pain around the vaginal entrance that can be caused by two factors: tension in the muscles or hypersensitivity of the vaginal entrance. Not only is this pain incapacitating, it also remains a taboo problem. That’s why Mélanie Morin’s research is working to improve the management of this pain of different origins by evaluating the effectiveness of physiotherapy, muscle puncture and laser treatment, with a view to offering personalised care in the future. Efforts are still needed, however, to better inform women and raise their awareness of this type of pain, so that they can access appropriate treatment more easily.
