The effects of music on pain

It is often stressed that medication should not be the only means of pain management. Many tools are available to enrich a non-medicated approach to pain self-management. Music is one such tool.

Mathieu Roy, professor at McGill University and member of QPRN, looks at the effects of music on pain management. In this iHeartRADIO podcast, Mathieu explains that music can have a negative effect on pain when listening to an unpleasant song, but can also have a positive effect when the song is pleasant. To do this, the song has to be one that we already particularly enjoy, and one that is melancholic and emotionally arousing. Mathieu Roy now wants to explain the mechanisms that induce this reduction in pain perception when listening to a song arousing these emotions.
