A research project serving clinical practice

Étienne Vachon-Presseau's research is aimed at predicting the risk of developing chronic pain, and aims to better serve clinicians.

Etienne Vachon-Presseau, Assistant Professor at McGill University’s Faculty of Dentistry and Oral Health Sciences, and member of the QPRN, recently published the results of his study on predicting the risk of chronic pain in the prestigious scientific journal Nature Medicine. His study looked at data from the UK Biobank, a large-scale biomedical database and research resource, containing in-depth information on the genetics and health of half a million British participants, and enabled him to highlight factors predictive of chronic pain or the spread of pain to other areas of the body in individuals. Beyond its predictive value, a tool based on 6 specific criteria can enable clinicians to determine the likelihood of an individual developing chronic pain. Anne Marie Pinard, Professor at the Faculty of Medicine at Université Laval and member of the QPRN, welcomes this innovation for clinical practice, which could ultimately lead to improved management of chronic pain and more optimal use of healthcare services for chronic pain.
