Pediatric pain

Pain management does not delay diagnosis or decision making and often facilitates the assessment and treatment of the child's condition by the health care professional. Pain in children has traditionally been under-recognized and under-treated.

Pain in children has historically been under-recognized and under-treated, and although progress has been made in assessment and treatment in recent years, gaps remain between knowledge and practice. Evelyne D. Trottier, an emergency physician in the Department of Pediatrics at Sainte Justine UHC, and Marie-Joëlle Doré-Bergeron, an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Sainte Justine UHC, consider pain assessment and treatment to be essential aspects of pediatric care. Appropriate pain management is associated with faster recovery and less use of health care resources. That’s why they worked as a team to develop a Canadian Paediatric Society position paper on the assessment and management of acute and chronic pain.
