While opioids were prescribed more frequently in the past, the new guidelines only recommend opioids as a last resort. Unfortunately, this change in approach to opioids has penalised a number of patients whose use of opioids was essential to their proper functioning. In this article, Prof Marc Martel (McGill University), <a href=\"https:\/\/experts.mcmaster.ca\/display\/bussejw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prof Jason Busse<\/a> (McMaster University), <a href=\"https:\/\/discover.research.utoronto.ca\/5023-david-juurlink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prof Juurlink<\/a> (University of Toronto), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfcm.utoronto.ca\/faculty\/abhimanyu-sud\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.dfcm.utoronto.ca\/faculty\/abhimanyu-sud\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prof Abhimanyu<\/a> (University of Toronto) and <a href=\"https:\/\/iud.quebec\/fr\/chercheur\/dre-marie-eve-goyer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prof Goyer<\/a> (University Institute of Dependence) give their views on opioid prescribing, patient withdrawal, stigma, mental health and the new guidelines for opioid use and prescribing.
