Unfortunately, at least a quarter of them will experience symptoms consistent with chronic LBP. The ability to identify people who are at greater risk of chronic LBP might help us pinpoint the causes of chronicity and develop strategies to prevent it. In this study, Carolina Meloto, Audrey Grant and their research teams will use data from the United Kingdom Biobank of more than half a million of participants to estimate how a person’s genetic properties will affect their risk of having chronic LBP. The genes that the team will specifically look at will also be confirmed using another dataset, the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

Previous studies done on other diseases also influenced by genetics, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and different types of cancer, taught us that using genetic variants to predict a health outcome is particularly useful when combining other measures.

Thus, the research team is working to build a prediction model with genetic information as well as age, sex, mood, and social support network and other measures that are being collected as part of the Quebec Back Pain Study, of the Quebec Back Pain Consortium, an ongoing effort launched and maintained by this team to predict the transition from acute to chronic LBP.

Progress

This model will help to focus healthcare resources by targeting high-risk individuals for more frequent screenings and more complex and intense therapy with physical and psychological treatments. This may lead to transformative health changes for these individuals through encouraging lifestyle changes to prevent the transition to chronic pain altogether.

Conclusion

As result of this study, researchers expect to identify people with acute LBP at greater risk of developing chronic LBP and in turn, to start to develop strategies to avoid it.

[69
38
post-11841","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-popularized-publications","tag-articles-en
["GET
